BLOCC [Building Leverage Over Creative Capitalism] leitet sich von «Block» ab: eine Komponente des Baumaterials, ein Viertel oder eine Teilung innerhalb einer Stadt oder ein gezieltes Behindern der Absichten eines Gegners oder einer Gegnerin. Es handelt sich um eine Strategie, um das Verhältnis zwischen zeitgenössischer Kunst und dem aktuellen globalen Phänomen der Gentrifizierung anzugehen. Wie können wir eine einzelne Entwicklung unseres Planeten bewältigen, parallel zu ihren vielen lokalen Erscheinungsformen? Wie also internationale Allianzen schmieden, wenn die Gültigkeit und das Arbeitswissen geradezu auf bestimmten Komponenten von Nachbarschaft beruhen? Und weiter noch, wie kann man die Mitschuld zu einem Zeitpunkt überleben, in dem Entwickler*innen, Stadtplaner*innen und gemeinnützige Organisationen Künstler*innen instrumentalisieren, die freiwillig oder unbewusst zu Kompliz*innen dieses gewaltvollen Vertreibungsprozesses werden?
Während des öffentlichen BLOCC Weblaunchs wird ein Lernsystem präsentiert, das auf die Beziehung zwischen zeitgenössischer Kunst und Gentrifizierung eingeht und auf einen Lehrplan aufbaut – den BLOCC-Lehrplan –, der lokale Möglichkeiten und Antigentrifizierungskämpfe aufgreift. Das System spiegelt eine neue Art des Unterrichtens wider, die prozessorientiert aus kollektiven Erfahrungen lehrt und lernt und in verschiedenen Umgebungen unterschiedlich funktioniert.

BLOCC (Building Leverage Over Creative Capitalism) derives from ‘block’: a component of building material, a neighborhood or partition within a city, or a deliberate obstruction of an opponent’s intentions. It is a strategy to tackle the relationship between contemporary art and the current global phenomenon of gentrification. How might we tackle a single planetary development alongside its many local manifestations? How, in other words, to forge international alliances when your legitimacy, and your working knowledge, stems from particular neighborhood materialities? Further, how to survive complicity in a moment when developers, city planners, and non-profits are instrumentalizing artists who, willingly or not, participate in the violent process of displacement.
During this public web launch, BLOCC will present their position – a system of learning, a chimera. It tackles the relationship between Contemporary Art and gentrification by building on an initial curriculum – the BLOCC curriculum – tapping into and inviting local possibilities and struggles. The system reflects a new way of teaching, templates are introduced from afar, adapted to any setting, and remain open-ended as the process builds.
