A big crinkle wall cuts through the interior of Grand Palais.
It forces you to change your route and look at the space in a new way.
Marije Vermeulen and Guido Nieuwendijk will both make an edgy wallpainting.
Playing together with the same crinkle shape, adding or cutting away, mixing their visual language and yet staying individually recognizable.

Ganz schön bunt hier!
Jedes Mal, wenn ich durchs Fenster schaue, sehe ich andere Linien, Farben und Formen. Wie bei Sponge-Bob in seinem Ananas-Haus auf dem Meeresgrund in der Unterwasserwelt.
Die beiden Kunstschaffenden, Marije Vermeulen (*1976 in Delft/NL) und Guido Nieuwendijk (*1967 in Auckland/NZ)) zeigen eine sich über alle drei Innenräume des Grand Palais spannende Installation mit dem Titel «Sharks, snakes and a dog’s dream» (2023).
Die Arbeit besteht aus mehreren Holzplatten und aus Dispersionsfarben und ihre Form wurde zuerst mit Hilfe einer Vorzeichnung mit Malerband auf dem Boden des Kunstraums fixiert. Wie eine eckige Schlange mäandert die Holzkonstruktion durch den Wartesaal am Helvetiaplatz. Als Störer oder Raumteiler ist die Installation nicht von allen Seiten begehbar. Etwas irritierend für Besucher*innen. Bitte die Handtasche nicht vergessen! Je nach Standpunkt ergeben sich neue Blickwinkel.
Ausgehend von Farbe und Form realisieren Marije Vermeulen und Guido Nieuwendijk primär Wandmalereien und Objekte. Sie arbeiten oftmals ortsspezifisch und verändern durch ihre klare und konzeptuelle Gestaltung Räume und Orte. Für die hier gezeigte Arbeit verwendeten die beiden Kunstschaffenden unterschiedliche Formen und Farben. Guido arbeitete mit einer Grundform, welche an eine Wurst oder an den Snack Cheetos Chipito erinnern mögen, während Marije für ihre Wandzeichnung spezifische
Formen und Ornamente aus ihrem imaginären Werkzeugkasten verwendet

Quite colorful here!
Every time I look through the window, I see different lines, colors and shapes. Like SpongeBob in his pineapple house at the bottom of the sea in the underwater world.
The two artists, Marije Vermeulen (*1976 in Delft/NL) and Guido Nieuwendijk (*1967 in Auckland/NZ)) show an installation spanning all three interior rooms of the Grand Palais entitled «Sharks, snakes and a dogs dream» (2023).
The work consists of several wooden panels and emulsion paint, and its shape was first fixed to the floor of the art room with the help of a preliminary drawing with painter›s tape. Like an angular snake, the wooden construction meanders through the waiting
room at Helvetiaplatz. As a disruptor or room divider, the installation is not accessible from all sides. Somewhat irritating for visitors. Please do not forget your handbag! Depending on the point of view, new perspectives arise.
Based on color and form, Marije Vermeulen and Guido Nieuwendijk primarily realize murals and objects. They often work site-specifically, transforming spaces and places through their clear and conceptual design. For the work shown here, the two artists
used different shapes and colors. Guido worked with a basic shape, which may remind of a sausage or the snack Cheetos Chipito, while Marije uses specific shapes and ornaments from her imaginary toolbox for her wall drawing.
